Santiago Zapotitlán (commonly called Zapotitlán) is one of the seven original towns of Tláhuac, founded by the Cuitlahuaca people around 1435 at the foot of the Xaltepec volcano in the Sierra de Santa Catarina. Its Nahuatl name means "among sapote trees" due to its lakeside setting between Chalco and Xochimilco.
Its traditional lifestyle blends colonial neighborhoods (Santiago, Santa Ana) with the La Conchita Zapotitlán neighborhood surrounding the Santiago Apóstol Church (Plaza Juárez). Zapotitlán is famous for its Festival of Lights and Music (February, featuring massive fireworks displays), carnival, and fairs that attract visitors. It is accessible via Avenida Tláhuac, Metro Line 12 (Zapotitlán station), and is close to chinampas (floating gardens).
