It was created specifically for officers and commanders of the Mexican Army under the government of Adolfo Ruiz Cortines, on 625,000 m² of communal land expropriated in 1951 by the Ministry of National Defense. Named after Mars—the Roman god of war—it is bordered to the north by Reforma Iztaccíhuatl and Barrio Santiago, to the west by Villa de Cortés and Nativitas (Benito Juárez), to the south by Reforma Iztaccíhuatl Sur, and to the east by Apatlaco and El Triunfo (Iztapalapa). Avenues such as Plutarco Elías Calles, Andrés Molina Enríquez, and Calzada de la Viga (formerly an underground canal) run through it.
