Del Carmen, Coyoacán is an emblematic Porfirian-era neighborhood in the northern part of the Coyoacán borough of Mexico City. Founded in 1890 on the site of the 16th-century Hacienda de San Pedro Mártir by the priest Juan Violante and the German merchant Segismundo Wolff, it was renamed in honor of Carmen Romero Rubio, wife of Porfirio Díaz. Bordered by Avenida México-Coyoacán, Río Churubusco, División del Norte, and Universidad, it is home to approximately 10,000 residents in eclectic houses, and features Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul (now the Frida Kahlo Museum), the Leon Trotsky Museum, and landmarks such as the Urrutia Sanatorium (now Preparatory School 6 of the National Autonomous University of Mexico).
